Physical Education majors can obtain an additional teacher certification by enrolling in the Adapted Physical Education minor. The Adapted Physical Education (APE) teacher is an educationally trained professional who is able to assess individual students with disabilities and develop, adapt, implement specialized physical education activities, skills, and movement experiences to meet the specific needs of the student with a disability.

The six-course minor is aligned with the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS). These standards are key outcomes the students will learn and practice within the APE minor. Students nearing the end of their program will have all the requisite knowledge, skills, and dispositions to take the national Certified Adapted Physical Education (CAPE) exam, which is a part of the APEN standards. This additional certification provides specific acknowledgement of the professional skills and training the teacher developed during their course work with individuals with disability in schools.

Once the PE degree requirements are met and the APE program minor requirements are completed, the student is eligible to apply for the State of Wisconsin Adaptive Physical Education (1860) License and thus becomes able to teach APE in the State of Wisconsin in Kindergarten through Grade 12.

All students in physical education teacher education have the option to declare APE as their minor.
