About the Kinesiology Department
Across our undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs, students learn concepts related to the scientific study of movement behavior, anatomy and physiology, research in kinesiology and fundamentals of exercise. Students learn in classroom, lab, and recreational settings, exploring hands-on ways to apply their studies in health, physical education, and functional performance. Graduates are prepared to take on rewarding careers in a variety of fields, leaving equipped with the knowledge and capabilities to enhance human health, productivity, and quality of life.
Kinesiology students benefit from robust experiences throughout their coursework: learning from award-winning faculty, engaging in fascinating undergraduate research, building connections through embedded engagement within the community, utilizing state-of-the-art fitness testing technology, and developing a foundational knowledge that prepares them to promote health and physical activity throughout the lifespan and across abilities. Each of our academic programs focus on the scientific study of movement behavior, anatomy and physiology, research in kinesiology and fundamentals of exercise, and their application to health, physical education, and functional performance.
Undergraduate Degrees
- Kinesiology - The BS degree in Kinesiology prepares students for graduate or professional study in areas related to physical activity and health.
- Health Promotion and Health Equity - The BS degree in HPHE is a collaborative undergraduate program broadly designed to provide students with the skills and perspectives to facilitate healthy practices at the individual and societal levels.
- Physical Education - The BS degree in Physical Education prepares teacher education students to teach physical education in elementary and secondary schools. Students in PE can choose to add a minor in Adapted Physical Education and/or a minor in Health Education.
Undergraduate Certificates
The kinesiology department is home to two certificates in Athletic Healthcare and Promoting Activity for Diverse Abilities that are open to both students pursuing kinesiology as well as other majors on campus.
The department also offers courses in health theory, strength and conditioning, and leadership to improve understanding, appreciation, and use of the body in movement and sports. Once declared kinesiology students have had the opportunity to enroll, kinesiology classes are opened to all university students.
