Engineering students abroad in front of a waterfall, "throwing" the W.

The Certificate in International Engineering provides recognition for a student's efforts to prepare for an international career by learning about a country or region of the world outside the United States. Any undergraduate student in the College of Engineering or the Department of Biological Systems Engineering can earn the certificate by completing courses with a primary focus on the language, culture, history, geography, society, or institutions of a particular country or region of the world.

How to Get in

Students can apply for the Certificate in International Engineering by completing this form. This certificate is open to undergraduate students in the College of Engineering or the Department of Biological Systems Engineering. Students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 and have met progression requirements to apply.

Requirements

A minimum of 13 credits is required. Up to six transfer/test (e.g. Advanced Placement)/retro credits can be used toward completing the certificate.

Language Courses (0-6 Credits)

Although not required, a maximum of six credits may be devoted to world language courses associated with a selected area of the World (i.e. Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Oceania). Only world language courses 3rd semester or higher in that particular language may be used to satisfy this requirement (as indicated by the language designation of three or higher). A maximum of three credits from Independent Study or Directed Study may be counted toward the language requirements (with approval).

Area Studies Courses (6-12 Credits)

A minimum of six credits must be devoted to courses with a major emphasis on the culture, history, geography, society, or institutions associated with a selected area of the world. These courses must be chosen from at least two departments. A maximum of three credits from Independent Study or Directed Study may be counted toward the area studies requirements (with approval).

International Experience

A documented stay of five weeks or longer for study or engineering-related volunteer work or paid work (including internship and co-op) in the selected area of the world is required.

International Engineering Course

Successful completion of the one-credit course INTEREGR 413 is required after the student's international experience. This course is offered only during the fall semester, and students must be admitted into the certificate to enroll in this course.

Students may not elect the pass/fail option for any course that is used to satisfy the certificate requirements, except for courses taken as part of a study abroad program through International Academic Programs in collaboration with the College of Engineering. Successful completion of certificate requirements will be noted on the student’s official transcript at graduation. For additional information, contact international@engr.wisc.edu.

Course Selection by Area of the World

Courses that apply to this certificate are broad, and new courses that may meet requirements are regularly created. At students' request, certificate advisors regularly review syllabi and approve certificate courses, particularly for the area studies courses.
