"Ms. Yang’s Class," by Jerry Jordan

Students with an interest in teaching English language learners should consider the English as a Second Language (ESL) minor, which leads to certification in ESL from kindergarten through grade 12. Fluency in English is required to teach ESL in schools, but fluency in a language other than English is not.

Certification in ESL provides a unique opportunity for Elementary Education students to empower every K-9 student, especially multilingual learners, recognizing that building a welcoming environment where every student, regardless of language ability, can thrive. Graduating with the ESL minor enhances a graduate's resume and enriches teaching practice and career prospects.

Students pursuing a minor in English as a Second Language will take coursework focused on the foundations of educating emergent bilinguals in K-12 classrooms. Coursework engages questions such as "How can instruction build from students' existing language resources,” and "How can ESL-certified teachers work with families and communities to develop meaningful relationships and support language development in school settings?” Attention is paid to research-based and equitable approaches to second language acquisition, bilingualism and multilingualism, and the expansion of K-12 students' linguistic repertoires

Courses focus on the following topics: ESL methods and classroom environments, language assessment practices, the alignment of English language development standards with disciplinary content standards across school subject areas, and policy frameworks that have shaped ESL and bilingual education in the United States.

The ESL minor was designed to be completed in tandem with the Elementary Education certification program; only students also completing Elementary Education may declare this minor.

“The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education helped me grow not only as a student but as a person. Through supportive faculty from Professors to TAs, meaningful course work, and hands-on experiences, I gained confidence in my voice and abilities. I learned to trust myself as a future educator and advocate and to see challenges as opportunities of growth rather than obstacles. More importantly it gave me the confidence to lead, learn, and belong.”             -Gabi Mauricio
